Understanding Your Business Life Cycle

Why You Can Never Stop Looking To Renew Your Business.

Your Business Life Cycle  Will Connect With Your Business Plan

Let’s face it Madonna is a great example of a business  life cycle and the need for constant re invention if you are to survive in any form of business.

Dr Greg Chapman  explains it well in The Five Pillars of Guaranteed Success. He refers to the following phases.

  • Start Up / Infancy
  • Adolescence
  • Growing Pains
  • Maturity
  • Decay

business life cycleDeep down inside I believe we all have the desire to start our own business. We humans are natural goal seeking achievers however in many cases you see the life sucked out of may small business owners as they get too caught up in the business they don’t see clearly what is happening around them.

Start Up and Infancy.

You are invincible, nothing can go wrong you have this wonderful idea and you know your a hard worker so why not. At this stage you not really paying yourself the correct money. You have not really set your profit objectives yet let alone a clear plan, sometimes you end up in business by accident.  In many cases you have just bought yourself a very expensive job. Areas of concern are survival and how to get more customers.  Business is a numbers game and there is no more important number than your profit number and knowing where that is coming from.

Some questions you could ask yourself.

  • How much have you invested in your business?
  • How much should you pay yourself?
  • What are the total running costs of your business?
  • What is your turnover objective?
  • What is your profit objective?
  • And do you have a good accountant?

Adolescence

So you have gone over the rough patch, business is growing clients are coming in. You can see more clearly where your heading although it can be a little more erratic great one month then the next it is quiet.  This is a great time to really sit down and look deeper into your business. Create a more systematic approach to managing and producing your sales. Right now the Internet has changed the small business world completely. Social media is dictating to you how your clients are moving forward, your business life cycle is changing every day, it is critical for you as a small business owner to stay on top of your marketing strategy and not throw money in advertising with out really having a plan. Review your SWOT analysis

Questions to ask yourself..

  • How can I accelerate my sales growth?
  • Do I need a greater understanding of online marketing and social media?
  • How can social media make my business more efficient?
  • How can I make my sales more predictable?
  • Do I need to look at additional steams of income sources?

business life cycle

Growing Pains

Growth is a difficult area for many and in particular with this changing economy. Growth is an area that requires change and change is not easy for many as it creates pain. Technology is a key for creating growth however technology means the small business owner must be willing to create change. It is essential for many small business to adapt in this area, mobile marketing, develop your own business app to market your business online. Master social media as your clients go online first to see what sort of online presence you have and if your not up to date you are seriously loosing clients. Online must become a part of your business life cycle if you are to strive and survive in this changing economy.

Business Maturity

This can be a dangerous time in business life cycle. Your cruising along well money seems to be flowing in well, the problem is the owner is their comfort zone.  This can be a danger sign when your coasting you take the foot of the pedal and guess what you start to go down hill. This economy has changed, the old Industrial business model is not working effectively any more you only have to look at the impact the closure of the Ford factory in Victoria will have on all business in the area. For small business to continually strive and grow their  business life cycle needs to be open and willing to implement new ideas. If you don’t invest in new ideas you are leaving your self open for decline.

Business Decay

If nothing changes , nothing changes. As I sat listening to business owners who have been comfortable for sometime they have grown very comfortably the problem is there has been no re inventing themselves. The reality is the economy has changed, instead of falling into the blame game routing, blame the government, the economy, staff, customers it is critical for you to be like Madonna and continually re invent your self.

Create Your Business Plan Both Online and Offline

Goals will drive your business plan but the key here is to really work out what you want your business to look like.

No matter what business you are in, offline or  online it is critical  to create your business plan.

Where Do You Start to Create Your Business Plan?

create your business plan

The first step really is to clearly identify what your long term goals and objectives are and then how are you going to achieve them. This can be a challenge, sometimes it is hard to think 10 years ahead to what could be possible. As well it can be a challenge if your not a really visual person, you might be more a person in the now making it hard to look that far ahead.

And let’s face it plans can change they are not set in concrete so don’t be hard on yourself…. even if you start with a 12 month plan then you can easily break that down to a Ninety day step in creating your business plan.

Goals can come from ideas like …

How well positioned are you as the industry expert?

create your business plan

Ideas might be in creating your business plan

  • Give an absolutely brilliant service – under promise / over deliver
  • Build outstanding relationships – learn technology like social media, mobile marketing to assist me to build relationships.
  • Set up strong testimonial and referral system – master technology, use my phone to get on the spot testimony, post to social media and my blog.
  • Create a consistent disciplined routine.
  • Have a great web site and mobile marketing tools that reflects my USP and client success
  • Master blogging and video email to connect with my customers and give added value.
  • Maintain a customer data base used for newsletter, video email, long term client retention
  • Form Joint Ventures.

This can be a great start in creating your business plan.  Once you have worked out what you want your business to look like in 5 years break down to 12 months then down to your 90 day plan. Print off your weekly goals from your 90 day plan. Allocate activities to those who in the team will look after and remember to put a finish date.

One area to be clear on when you create your business plan is to clearly work out what your point of difference is to be.

To your abundance

Ranking Your Profit Drivers

Financial Profit Drivers Link with Non Financial Profit Drivers

When focusing on your profit drivers you can clearly see what areas need adjusting however as we mentioned in the last post you must have some form of measurement to enable you to have a starting point for growth.

For example… Non Financial profit drivers

  • How do you measure your client satisfaction?
  • How do you measure business culture and value?
  • How do you measure your market share?
  • Looking at your fixed and variable costs?
  • How to improve or maintain employee satisfaction?

These all link clearly with your Financial profit drivers. When you look at the 3 factors that give you your turnover for your business

  • Number of customers
  • Average Dollar Transaction
  • Number of times this client visits you per yearprofit

You can improve your business by improving in any one of these areas. You must acquire more customers or sell to them more often or increase the amount you sell to them each time.

Here is the Profit Sticky Point!

Small Business faces the challenge of competing online or with the bigger stores down the road. When I visit my local hairdresser I know staff have pressure to up sell, cross sell and from the clients point of view it becomes quiet frustrating.

Particularly when I can go online order my product have it delivered to me one to two days later with no freight and a lot less than I would pay in the salon.

You can even walk into one of our local pharmacy and find some of the top brands which have always promoted themselves as ‘Salon only’

Same thing happens with just about all products, it can be found somewhere else  or online for a lot cheaper.

Staying Top Of Mind With Your Client List Will Keep Your Profit On Track!

Now he is the hard part, for small business to strengthen their profit line, they must adapt and start to use the tools of the connection economy and use the online power particularly for word of mouth marketing.  Now many small business may say they don’t have time, their too busy I will pay someone to do that.

Well that is great if you have all your profit drivers in place and your producing the extra revenue to cover that. Many small business just do not generate enough revenue to put away for their retirement plan let alone pay some one to do it.

Redefining Courage To Build Your Profit.

Seth Godin has a line in his book The Icarus Deception “Courage is the willingness to speak the truth about what you see and to own what you say”

It is here where I must speak the truth for me. What I see is small business have enormous opportunity to capitalize on this new economy – the connection economy simply by using the tools now available for them. The best part about it is although the business down the road might be seen as your competition. In this new economy that business down the road can now be your connection partner, your joint venture partner.profit

Let’s look at some profit examples you can use to connect and stay top of mind with your customer.

  • Video Email
  • Small Business Apps
  • Blogging
  • Social Media
  • Beauty / Health Products
  • Cards
  • SMS Text Messaging services

Here is just a few, I know after three years online there are many all which will pay you a referral income to use and promote their products.

What is also critical to understand when you connect with the right company for you they provide the most unbelievable training by 6 and 7 figure earners.

My rule of thumb now If it is not paying me a referral income now I do not use it…

Small Business owners can create additional profit streams as well as long term business opportunities going long after they may even sell their existing business.

The connection economy is providing ways for small business to minimize loss by taking a little risk and when you follow the plan clearly gain your additional profit.

How well positioned are you as the industry expert and is it gaining you the profit you deserve?

Profit Drivers Examples Start With Knowing Your Numbers

You must know your Numbers If Your Profit Drivers Are To Work

Profit Drivers Examples Rule of Thumb – You Cannot Manage What You Cannot Measure

Truly understand your numbers and you become a master of your business.

These numbers are the start of your profit drivers example and will tell you how well your business is doing and provide you with immediate feedback so you can always make the best decisions. Many Business owners don’t run their business with a dashboard of KPI’s (Key performance Indicators) Could also be referred to as profit driver examples which allow you to see the health of the your business as well as the health of your staff.

You can read more on Profit Driver Examples at my small business page…

profit drivers examples

Profit Driver Examples Fall into both Financial Profit Drivers and Non Financial Profit Drivers

As you read over the page on profit drivers examples  there I particularly want to point to the area expressed as

  • Number (e.g. average number of sales per month)
  • Dollar figure (e.g. the average sale per client)
  • Percentage (e.g. percentage of clients who are repeat business)

This really can be a challenge as no one has any targets; no one knows what their break even is even at their profit goal. Not knowing these numbers, how on earth will your staff know their KPI’s or profit drivers to give them a level of accountability?

Now when you measure numbers like those above you can clearly see how this will link to your Non - financial profit drivers examples. Areas like ..

  • Client satisfaction
  • Quality of the product or service
  • Training of employees and employee satisfaction

Making Profit Drivers Work For Your Business.

Every business wants 3 things – more customers, more revenue, and more profit.

Let’s start with the customers. As you will see there are two steps that happen before they become customers. Firstly you have to generate the lead and then you have to convert them. Why is that important? Well, we need to find out how many of your leads are becoming valuable clients.

Creating Raving Fans

Once you have clients or customers, I believe it is critical to develop a loyal following, keep in contact with your followers and allow your followers to do your marketing for you.

The Number one lesson I have learnt on line is The Money Is In The List…

What perfect opportunity do small business owners have….many already have a data base and yes your data base is gold. The problem is many are not looking after their data base and maintaining their raving fans.

A Perfect Profit Driver Example – For a Restaurant

Have you ever been to a restaurant where they asked you for your contact details? Maybe if you were the one to book the table  but for me know it has never happened.

Remembering the key with any business is to build a loyal following of raving fans… Yet restaurants seem to be struggling and many change hands or close down.

Yet restaurants could build their contact list if they used a Business App to promote themselves. The waitress could say to you down load our app and receive 10% of the total bill or an entree for free.

Now your starting to collect contact details and bang in the next few weeks you could be having a “Winter Warmer” pre dinner drinks 2 for 1 approach and all you do is send a push notification or a mobile coupon to present at the bar and now your starting to develop your raving fans..

Your # One Profit Drivers Examples I can give you is to build a loyal following of raving fans.

To learn more how your own Business APP could work to help you build your list, keep in contact & build relationships with your raving fans then have a look at this video.

In our next post we will look deeper at how you can position yourself as your industry expert.

Till remember to measure your numbers.
